The Cuba Decide citizen initiative, represented by Juan Carlos Vargas and Jatzel Román, carried out an agenda of political meetings with high-level authorities in the Central American region between August 7-16, in order to socialize the work that is being done and bring together all the intentions to achieve the total freedom of the Cuban people. It began in San José, Costa Rica, where the delegates were received by the President of the Legislative Assembly, Carlos Ricardo Benavides of the National Liberation Party (PLN), as well as the representatives of the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), National Integration Party (PIN) and the Social Christian Republican Party (PRSC). In addition to this, they had a conversation with the former Presidents of the Republic, Oscar Arias (1986-1990) and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez (1998-2002).
Continuing the tour, the commission moved to Guatemala City, where the Vice President of the Board of the Congress of the Republic, Felipe Alejos, ratified his support for the promoter of Cuba Decide, Rosa María Payá, as well as for the Cuban people which during six decades has fought for his freedom. A similar statement was made by the President of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, Dr. Normán Quijano, who received the young delegates in his official office.
Completing the agenda in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the newly appointed Foreign Affairs Minister, Lisandro Rosales, expressed his government´s intention to collaborate with those hemispheric countries such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia and the United States, which are promoting measures against the Castro dictatorship and in favor of democracy on the Caribbean island. The Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Honduran Congress, Tomás Zambrano, expressed a similar intention.
Cuba Decide, together with the Pan American Democracy Foundation and the Latin American Youth Network for Democracy, have made public their proposal to establish July 22 as the Day of Commemoration of the Victims of Totalitarianism. This in memory of the Cuban opposition leaders, Oswaldo Payá and Harold Cepero, who were murdered by agents of the communist regime on that date in 2012. Said proposal has been presented to various governmental, congress, municipal and civil society organizations in the Latin American area, seeking to specify this action as a message of solidarity with those who have bravely fought for freedom against all criminal dictatorships and their totalitarian allies.
