The devastating disparity between the cost of food and the basic incomes of workers has reached alarming levels in Cuba.

Socialist economic policies have driven the situation to harrowing extremes. For instance, the monthly minimum wage in Cuba for the year 2024 barely reaches $30 US dollars, a figure significantly below international standards. Even average salaries, such as that of a teacher, which hovers around $5050 pesos ($210 dollars), are utterly insufficient to meet the most basic needs, especially when dependents like children are involved.

Previously, a pound of rice cost only $10 pesos, but now it has soared to $220 pesos ($9.16 dollars). An egg that used to cost $2.50 pesos now sells for $100 pesos ($4.17 dollars), and a pound of sugar has jumped from $8 pesos to $400 pesos ($16.66 dollars).

Products like powdered milk and oil, which were already difficult for the majority to obtain before, are now impossible, with prices of $1200 pesos ($49.99 dollars) and $350 pesos ($14.58 dollars) per pound, respectively.

The situation worsens even further for highly skilled professionals such as doctors, whose salaries do not adequately reflect their training and responsibilities. Despite their dedication and education, doctors in Cuba face wages that hardly reach $100 US dollars per month, placing them in a precarious situation and further hindering their ability to support themselves and their families.

While these changes began in late 2020, the situation worsened even more after the protests of July 11, 2021, where thousands of Cubans took to the streets to demand freedom and significant changes. In response, the government intensified its repression, arresting protesters and silencing any form of dissent. This crisis is not only economic; it is a humanitarian tragedy that requires urgent attention and a radical change in the system to prevent further suffering.
