UPDATE

Barely three days after ending his hunger strike, Alexei Martínez is facing increased repression from the regime

After 27 days on hunger strike for his freedom, 52-year-old activist Alexei Martínez Rojas ended his hunger strike on Sunday, October 13th, as confirmed by his wife, Mariangel Rodríguez Cruz. His health condition, which was already critical two weeks ago, remains uncertain.

Martínez Rojas, an activist and promoter of the citizen initiative Cuba Decide, began his hunger strike on September 17, 2024, in protest against his unjust detention and the contempt charges he faces after denouncing police abuse in a live Facebook broadcast.

Alexei’s wife was able to visit him briefly in the hospital, where he appears alarmingly weak and thin. No medical professional provided her with information about her husband’s medical condition, increasing her concern. To make matters worse, “he is expected to be transferred from the hospital to Guamajal prison tomorrow,” commented Mariangel.

The Incidents Report Center of the Foundation for Pan American Democracy (FDP) reiterates its call for the immediate release of Alexei Martínez. We demand that his fundamental human rights be respected.

We urge the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), to which this Center submitted an Urgent Appeal a week ago, and democratic governments to continue monitoring this case and demand that the Cuban regime guarantee the safety and freedom of Alexei Martínez Rojas and all political prisoners in Cuba.
