In the last two and a half years, the most significant exodus of Cubans since 1959 has been observed, surpassing migrations resulting from crises in 1980 and 1994. This migration represents approximately 4% of the Cuban population and includes young people and professionals.

According to a report from the United States government, between 2022 and 2023, around 425,000 Cubans arrived in US territory, many of them crossing the border with Mexico.

The onset of this mass exodus dates back to November 2021 when the Nicaraguan government, an ally of Cuba, eliminated the visa requirement. Since then, many Cubans have embarked on a grueling journey of approximately 3,000 kilometers on foot to reach the border between Mexico and the United States.

The shortage of food, medicine and fuel has led thousands of Cubans to leave.

Spain has also become one of the favorite destinations for the Cuban population, especially after the approval in 2022 of the so-called “grandchildren law,” which allows descendants of Spaniards to obtain nationality. Additionally, countries in Latin America also receive Cubans. In the last two years, 36,500 sought refuge in Mexico, 22,000 entered Uruguay, and hundreds of Cubans arrived in Chile, according to official figures from these three nations.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Cuba’s economic crisis, considered the worst in the last 30 years, has led to shortages of food, medicine, and fuel, prompting thousands of Cubans to leave. Furthermore, many are also fleeing political persecution and the lack of freedoms and rights on the island. In this regard, repression against protesters and activists by the Cuban dictatorship has led to an increase in political asylum requests in the United States.

Although there is no updated and accurate information on the number of Cubans exiled worldwide, it is estimated that around two million live abroad, representing approximately 18% of Cuba’s total population.
