The initiative to rename the street in front of the Cuban embassy in Washington, D.C., aims to honor Oswaldo Payá, a tireless advocate for freedom in Cuba. The proposal seeks to name the street “Oswaldo Payá Way” through resolution H.R. 1239, which has already passed the U.S. Senate and is awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives.
Oswaldo Payá dedicated his life to promoting human rights and democracy in Cuba. He founded the Varela Project, which peacefully called for basic rights like freedom of speech and assembly on the island. His efforts earned him international recognition, including the Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament.
Sadly, on July 22, 2012, Oswaldo Payá and activist Harold Cepero were killed in an attack that, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, was the responsibility of the Cuban regime. This, along with the recent approval of the resolution in the Senate, highlights the importance of passing this law in the House of Representatives.
Renaming the street in front of the Cuban embassy would be a permanent reminder of the fight for freedom in Cuba and a clear message to the Cuban regime that the United States stands firmly with those who risk everything for justice and liberty.
Supporting this resolution also reflects the core values of the United States: democracy, freedom of speech, and human rights. The Cuban-American community and everyone who values freedom will see this gesture as a symbol of solidarity and hope.
