Jose Daniel Ferrer, a political prisoner, leader of UNPACU, and promoter of Cuba Decide, about whom rumors circulated in recent days that he may have died, is alive. His family was able to confirm this on Monday, March 18, after almost four months without news of him, unable to visit or communicate with him.
His daughter Fatima Victoria Ferrer Cantillo went to Mar Verde prison, where Ferrer has been imprisoned for almost three years, demanding proof of life about her father. Finally, the authorities relented and allowed her to see him for 2 minutes in the isolation cell where he has been confined since August 14, 2021.
Jose Daniel Ferrer is being held in inhumane and degrading conditions and is subjected to constant physical and psychological torture. In fact, his daughter witnessed her father’s health condition. “Upon arriving at the isolation cell, she saw Jose Daniel lying on the floor, unable to even sit on the floor where he was lying,” said Ferrer’s sister in a video posted by UNPACU on their YouTube channel.

The rumors of his death were not true, but that does not diminish a grave fact: the Cuban regime is slowly killing Jose Daniel, from the day he was arrested, depriving him not only of freedom but also of all his rights. Since March 2023, the dictatorship has denied him family and marital visits, and in November of the same year was the last time his family heard his voice through a phone call.
The dictatorship succumbed to our pressure and showed Jose Daniel Ferrer, but our concern only grows. His daughter Fatima hugged a father who couldn’t even sit on the floor of the cell where he was lying.
