The citizens of Santiago de Cuba took to the streets to demand changes.
On March 17, 2024, the streets of Santiago de Cuba witnessed a resounding peaceful demonstration led by hundreds of people, who massed together to express their discontent with the crisis situation affecting the country. The protests took place within a context of recurrent blackouts, food shortages, and the blocking of internet signals, issues that have exacerbated the daily difficulties faced by Cubans.
The demonstrations were reported from Sunday afternoon on the central Carretera del Morro Avenue and 9th Street in Veguita de Galo. Furthermore, they spread to other locations such as Ciego de Ávila, Holguín, and Bayamo, where Cubans also took to the streets to speak out against the regime.
The protesters made their voices heard with slogans like “Electricity and food” and “Homeland and life,” reflecting the urgency for concrete solutions to address the lack of electrical supply and food scarcity. This manifestation of discontent once again highlights the Cuban population’s frustration with the precarious living conditions and the lack of freedoms and fundamental rights they endure due to the communist dictatorship.

In response to the protests, the Castro authorities repressed the demonstrators. Images circulated on social media showed police officers beating and arresting several citizens who were running to avoid being detained. Additionally, communications were cut off to prevent the rest of the country and the world from learning about what was happening.
