According to a recent report by Prisoners Defenders, there has been a significant increase in the number of political prisoners on the island following the demonstrations in March. Thirty-one new political and conscience prisoners were added to the list, including independent journalists, social movement leaders, and human rights defenders.

The report indicates that the Cuban government has intensified its repression against dissidents and activists, resulting in an alarming increase in the detention of individuals for political reasons. The municipalities with the highest number of new political prisoners due to the March protests are Santiago de Cuba and Holguín, although there are also prisoners for this reason in Artemisa, Cienfuegos, Havana, Las Tunas, and Sancti Spíritus.

Of the 1,092 political prisoners in Cuba, 30 are minors and 119 are women. At least 16 minors have been convicted of “sedition” with an average sentence of 5 years in prison, while 222 protesters face an average of 10 years of deprivation of liberty on the same charges. Additionally, 260 political prisoners suffer from serious illnesses and do not receive adequate medical treatment.

One of the prisoners at risk is Javier Delgado Torna, promoter of Cuba Decide and a political prisoner. Due to his health situation, on April 10, the IACHR, transferring the precautionary measure request initiated by our platform, sent a communication to the Cuban regime.

Likewise, Julián Mazola, another political prisoner who has been deprived of his liberty since the demonstrations of July 11, suffered an attempted rape in the Guanajay prison. For this reason, the IACHR requested information from the regime. However, the Cuban dictatorship did not respond to either of the Commission’s two requests.
